Dallas Stars acquire Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames

Currently battling for a Central Division title as one of the top teams in the NHL, the Dallas Stars made their intentions clear to make a serious Stanley Cup run, acquiring defenseman Chris Tanev from the Calgary Flames. The Stars will also receive goaltending prospect Cole Brady. In return, the Flames will receive defense prospect Artem Grushikov a second-round pick in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft on the condition that the Stars advance to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. To complete the deal, Dallas will send over a 2026 fourth-round draft pick to the New Jersey Devils, to retain 50% of Tanev’s cap hit. With the Flames outside the playoff picture, they will continue to be deadline sellers, and look to recoup what they can from what has turned out to be another rebuilding season.

As an undrafted free agent out of Rochester Institute of Technology, Tanev became his alma mater’s first NHL player when debuting with the Vancouver Canucks in 2010. As a fill-in for injured players, Tanev featured in five games of the Canucks 2011 playoff run, ultimately falling to the Boston Bruins in a hard-fought seven game Stanley Cup Final. He would spend a decade in Vancouver, before joining the Flames for the 2021 season on a four-year, $18 million deal, and comes to Dallas on the eve of unrestricted free agency. Long lauded for steady and disciplined play, the Stars will look to Tanev to hold down the blue line, as they look to make a playoff breakthrough after falling two games shy of a Stanley Cup appearance last season, and two games shy of a Stanley Cup title four seasons ago.
